"Paul within Judaism". The ‘within Judaism’ Paradigm Today by Rabbi Joe Charnes: Presentation and Discussion
The “Paul within Judaism” perspective has gained increasing prominence in New Testament studies in recent years. Building on the New Perspective on Paul, this approach understands Paul as firmly rooted in ancient Judaism and as having remained within Judaism until his death. Accordingly, its proponents draw on texts from both early Judaism and rabbinic Judaism as comparative sources.
Rabbi Joe Charnes has become known for his critical engagement with this approach, including at the annual meetings of the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) and the European Association of Biblical Studies (EABS). Other Jewish scholars have since joined him in questioning this perspective. We have invited him to present his critique and discuss with us Paul, his theological development, and the question of which sources provide appropriate points of comparison.
